Delano Williams won CARIFTA gold again for the Turks and Caicos Islands in competition over the Easter weekend in Bermuda.

The 19-year-old TC Islander, who is attending school at Munro College in Jamaica, ran 20.83 seconds to defend his 2011 under-20 men’s 200 metre CARIFTA title.

Williams now hopes to earn a spot on the U.K.’s Olympic team when he attends its Olympic Trials later this year.

As a U.K. overseas territory, the TCI can’t send athletes to the Olympics, but Williams can compete on the U.K. team because he recently obtained his British passport. That has prompted some in Great Britain to criticize U.K. athletes from other countries as “plastic Brits.”

“I have to say as governor, and also on behalf of I hope the people of TCI and the British government, how dismayed I was by some of the coverage of this in the British media,” said His Excellency the Gov. Ric Todd, whose office expedited Williams’ passport. “I think the suggestion that Delano is somehow not British or is an import, or that dreadful news piece that he is a ‘plastic Brit’ is completely nonsensical.”

“I think it’s wrong and almost shameful that people should say that. Delano Williams is a born TC Islander, and he’s born British, and he’s as British as I am.

“I’m delighted he has the opportunity to compete for a place in the Olympic games. I would also like to offer him my best wishes, and say that I and the people of TCI and I’m sure people all across Britain will be cheering him in the event he’s able to compete.”

The TCI government has agreed to help provide financial support for Williams and others to help them to pursue their athletic careers. The governor said his office will do whatever else it can to help Williams make the Olympic team.

“This admirable young man deserves a chance to show his talents on perhaps the biggest athletic stage in the world,” Todd said.
