![]() After narrowly defeating Carlos Simons for leadership of the Progressive National Party just a week ago, party Leader Dr. Rufus Ewing chose his challenger as deputy leader. “I have no doubt that Mr. Simons will be able to deliver effectively as a deputy leader and also as a candidate,” Ewing said at a June 11 press conference at which Simons was not present. Simons was the “obvious choice” to most people, losing to him by a vote of 52-46, Ewing said. Simons, a Queen’s Counsel attorney from Grand Turk, is a former member of the Legislative Council and has served on many boards, bringing experience and an island balance to the ticket. Simons was among about eight on a short list, Ewing said, including women such as Arabella Smith and Ruth Blackman and men such as Royal Robinson and E. Jay Saunders. Outgoing leader Clayton Greene picked Albray V. Butterfield Jr. as his deputy in 2010, but party objections caused Butterfield to resigned from the post.
