Late surge of voter registration PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Voter registration for the upcoming election is now officially closed.

The final number of approved registered voters was not available at press time July 5, but a late rush to register may have pushed the total to near 7,000, or about as many who were registered for the last election in 2007.

On June 28, the government last reported more than 5,000 voters having registered since April 16.

As the June 29 deadline approached, calls to extend the deadline were made by some members of the community, but Clara Gardiner, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Border Control and Labour, and Dudley Lewis of the Elections Office refused to budge on the deadline.

“Voter registration will not be extended from today’s deadline (June 29),” they said in a joint statement. “This cannot be done as it would have a detrimental knock on effect on all of the other election preparations. Four months might seem a long way off now, but there is a significant body of work still to be completed.”

The two reported July 2 that staff in the Providenciales registration office worked until 1 a.m. on the morning of June 30 June, and until 9 p.m. June 28 to process voter registration applications.

“This was a fantastic effort by all of the staff involved,” the statement said. “We would like to personally thank them for all of their hard work and their commitment to ensuring that applicants were processed properly. We can be certain that this 10-week long registration process will ensure that we have the best quality data available to us.”

Last week the three members of the Electoral Boundaries Commission were announced by the governor. Their work is intended to start immediately, with results expected to be presented to the governor later this month.

The next step in the process towards elections, according to the governor’s recently released agenda, is the Electoral Boundaries ordinance to put into law the 10 new electoral districts, which is expected in August.
